16.

The navy commander had reappeared and was as talkative as the last time; Joe was used to this as it was standard procedure for the crew of a vessel that was hosting any kind of special ops not to be in contact with the operatives for more than was strictly necessary. They also didn’t pass many crewmen and those that were evident stood out of the way and avoided eye contact. They were led down several decks onto what was probably an aircraft hangar deck except that there was a large accommodation building sitting in the middle. It looked like it had been plucked from a field at some construction site on land.

‘This is your accommodation, gentlemen. Everything you need for the time being is inside; please do not venture from this facility. Should you require anything extra, please use the telephone that is inside the living area. Chow will be delivered to you. A guard is posted here to maintain your privacy; I will collect you when the professor is ready to continue.’

They all moved into the structure, which was quite substantial; obviously not part of the carrier and had probably been brought down on the aircraft lift into the hangar deck. There was a large seating area with a very large flat screen TV and a work area that had tea and coffee making items. There was a large boiler hissing away that was attached to the wall over the sink. Off the main room was a row of doors that led to ten sleeping compartments, each with a single bed, cupboard space and yet another TV.

‘Well, Joe, what are we going to do next? It all seems to have fallen off the table as far as planning goes, unless there is a master plan but we haven’t been told the detail yet.’ John Flett was obviously getting a little irritated with the waiting around.

‘I think that it would be a good idea to get a shower and have a sleep for now; not much point in speculation because so far it has been a very weird trip.’ Joe was now looking for a mug in the drawers that were under the counter at the tea station.

‘Who’s for coffee? Tea?’

The nine men split up and made the best of what was on offer; eating, showering and generally getting cleaned up. It wasn’t long before most of them had got into bed and gone to sleep. Joe, Tom and John were sat around the table talking about what had transpired over the last weeks. John Flett explained that he and his team had been doing very similar work to Joe and Tom but that he didn’t know until today that his team was not the only one.

‘How many more teams do you think they have out there, Joe?’

‘Don’t know but I’m willing to bet we are a very small part of the whole; perhaps we will find out more when the professor has got some information from Big Dave.’
